Our Favourite Winter Pop Ups
It’s getting colder, and that means that we’re hunting for the minced pies, mulled wine and warming fires in the City. There’s nothing London does better than pop-up, temporary bars and activities, especially in the winter. Pop-ups make us feel like children again, getting us into the Christmas spirit with their wonderful winter themes. So, here are our favourite winter pop-ups in the city…
THE GARDENING SOCIETY FESTIVE FOREST
Everyone knows that John Lewis is the King of Christmas, so why shouldn’t they be the King of Christmas pop-ups too? Step into this most festive of department stores on Oxford Street, at the steps of The Mandeville Hotel, and take the lift up to the Fifth Floor to begin your winter adventure. Find here a rooftop dining venue that you can really sink your teeth into. Bask in the atmosphere of fairy lights and Christmas cheer, or book your own private Swiss lodge, with your very own ‘hot toddy’ bell for drinks and your own personal sound system to listen to your favourite festive tunes. The food is brought to you by top meat experts Mac & Wild and includes a wide range of traditional British favourites, such as venison and British beef. There’s even a heated terrace where you can get a breath of fresh air and look out to the beautiful Christmas lights of Oxford Street below you.
GINGERBREAD WINTER CABIN AT YORK & ALBANY
Head to Camden for one of the cosiest pubs in London, transformed into your wildest winter dreams? It’s all about the festive cabins here: so book ahead to avoid disappointment. This cookie-covered cabin will warm you from the outside-in with fluffy blankets and a wonderful gingerbread-themed menu of treats. Sample the gingerbread afternoon tea, featuring stem ginger and cranberry scones, or indulge in a gingerbread espresso martini that will bring your childhood rushing back to you in a wave of warming alcohol and cheer. And why not top it all off with a giant gingerbread man, which you can decorate yourself and then enjoy in proper grown-down style?
BACKYARD CINEMA WINTER NIGHT GARDEN
There’s nothing more comforting than watching a great film on a winter’s evening. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay at home this season, as the famous Backyard Cinema crew are bringing you a festive line up of films to keep you going through the darker, colder days. These guys are known for bringing you the best film pop-ups around, with a great reputation for top drinks and relaxing atmosphere. The pop-up cinema has all of our favourite elements of Christmas including fairly lights, warming drinks and best of all, warm blankets and a fire. Enter through a secret wardrobe and an illuminated woodland gateway into the Winter Night Garden for a spell-binding night of mulled-wine sipping and mince-pie nibbling in the beautiful snow-dusted forest. ‘Backyard’ themed but very much as cosy as your favourite spot in the living room, rouse yourself out of the house this winter for festive favourites, such as ‘Love Actually’, ‘Elf’, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’, ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Home Alone’.
VAUXHALL WINTER VILLAGE
Lastly, it’s not winter without a bit of skiing now, is it Londoners? Get away from the city for the evening and let Vauxhall’s winter ski village pop-up transport you to the slopes for a night of unforgettable frivolities and fun, without the freezing-cold of snow. This brand new pop-up bar has everything from fondue stalls to eggnog drinks to spiced cocktails. Tuck yourself in snugly into one of the cosy little lodges, pap a photo at the cable-car photo booth or park yourself firmly at the foot of the Alpine sports bar for the perfect night of apres ski without the skiing (and that’s always the best bit, anyway!).
