Marylebone Talks: KJ's Laundry
We sat down with Jane Ellis and Kate Allden, two girls with an eye for fashion and founders of popular boutique Marylebone shop, KJ’s Laundry. Here are their inside picks of the best things to see and do in the area and the low-down on our favourite local boutique.
Tell us a bit about the story behind KJ’s Laundry?
We opened KJ’s Laundry 10 years ago, as passionate fashionistas ourselves looking for a new adventure in the retail world. Looking around us, we noticed that it was hard to find a range of exclusive labels in London all in one place. There was no clothing boutique that was getting it spot on: so we decided to fill the gap in the market.
What made you wan to set up in Marylebone?
We love Marylebone! At the time that we were starting our business, Marylebone was very much an up and coming area. Now it has become London’s hotspot. The rent at the time was also very reasonable and we loved the central London location.
You have a very interesting range of brands, how do you decide on which ones make it into the store?
We focus on exclusivity and uniqueness. We want to expand the fashion horizons of our clients and make shopping easier for them, so we choose labels that aren’t too well known in the UK or ones that are otherwise hard to find. We’re also always on the look out for up and coming brands. But we don’t stock labels that are too abstract, either. We look for more wearable and feminine styles; the types of items that you actually want to take home with you. We like our customers to get a lot of wear out of their purchases.

What are your go-to fashion pieces that everyone should have on them when in London?
Sneakers are very in right now. They’re everywhere and our customers really like the sports luxe feel, so I would definitely recommend some Rose Rankin Sneakers to hit the London pavements in comfort and pure style. Team them with some BLK DENIM jeans, a pretty feminine Masscob top and a Pomandere coat and you’re good to go!
What is your must-have winter accessory?
Scarves are the key to staying warm and fashionable at the same time in winter. A cosy Humanoid or Maposie Scarf are must-haves for instant class and insulation!
How would you spend your perfect day in Marylebone?
We’d say, jump off the tube at Baker Street and wander down either the High Street or down through Chiltern Street. Just meandering about these beautiful streets is spell-binding. Stop off for a quick morning coffee and a browse in the Conran Shop and then check out the lovely shops on Marylebone High Street and Marylebone Lane. Take a long look around the Wallace Collection and stop here for a delicious lunch. And don’t forget to spend an hour or two looking through the latest editions at the historic bookshop, Daunt Books. Probably time for a livener by then so I’d pop into the Fromagerie for a glass of something and a nibble.
